Tim Walz’s Wife Gwen Embraces Florals in Carolina Herrera Dress for Night One of Democratic National Convention

Gwen Walz blossomed in Carolina Herrera on Monday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The wife of vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz selected a fit and flare jacquard frock by the Venezuelan designer, which features a purple rose print. She completed her look with diamond studs.

Gwen and Tim Walz were accompanied by their children, Hope and Gus, as well as the Democratic nominee for president, Kamala Harris, who sported a custom tan suit by Chloé.

The first night of the DNC featured speeches from President Joe Biden and his daughter, Ashley, as well as Hillary Clinton and Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Country singer Mickey Guyton performed at the event, which is taking place at the United Center through Thursday.

After returning to the U.S. from China, Tim Walz met his future wife when they were starting out as teachers in Alliance, Neb. He married Gwen in 1994, welcoming their children in 2001 and 2006, respectively.

Gwen Walz often favors non-coordinated jackets and slacks. She has worn such combinations as a periwinkle blue pantsuit with a light blue crewneck top, a rose-colored dress with fluted sleeves and a multicolored striped border with black tights, and a black blouse and pants with a hot pink nubby wool jacket with gold buttons. More casual combinations include a red plaid knotted wool scarf, navy jacket and red sweater. Her layered highlighted hair resembles former U.S. Secretary of State Clinton’s coif.

Gwen Walz’s résumé includes work in public, alternative and migrant schools. She has taught the incarcerated, advocated for criminal justice reform and supported the LGBTQ movement. She has reportedly argued that the Department of Education needs to collaborate with school districts more and focus less on top-down regulatory compliance.

Gwen Walz is said to be one of her husband’s closest advisers. As first lady of Minnesota, she was the first to have an office in the Capitol. In an interview with her mother’s alma mater Augsburg University, Gwen Walz once said, “My first question to myself and others is always, ‘Whom do we serve?’”
